Get to Know Almost Heaven, West Virginia

Want to get more acquainted with the Mountain State before your trip? Here are a few facts about Almost Heaven, West Virginia.

West Virginia is the only state located completely within the Appalachian Mountain Range, which earned it the nickname “Mountain State.”

West Virginia is the third most forested state, with 75% of its land covered in lush forests.

West Virginia is comparable in size to both Latvia and Lithuania, at just 62,755 square kilometers.

West Virginia is the only state born from the Civil War. It was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, under a proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln. West Virginia is also the only state to be admitted under a presidential proclamation.

West Virginia is home to one of America’s newest national parks, the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, making it the 63rd in the country. The New River runs through Appalachia’s own little version of the Grand Canyon, at 900 feet deep, with renowned rock climbing at the top, world-class whitewater rafting at the bottom and miles of lush trails to be explored.

The New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville is the longest steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere. It spans a length of 1,700 feet. Every October on Bridge Day, individuals parachute, BASE jump and zip line 876 feet off the bridge and into the New River waiting below.

Standing tall at 292 feet, the State Capitol dome is higher than the dome of the nation’s capital building and is gilded in gold and copper.

West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW) in Charleston offers nonstop flights to Atlanta, Charleston (SC), Charlotte, Chicago, Orlando and Washington, DC through American Airlines, United, Delta and Breeze.

North Central West Virginia Airport (CKB)

The North Central West Virginia Airport (CKB) in Clarksburg currently offers service to Orlando/Sanford, FL and Myrtle Beach, SC through Allegiant. More recently, Allegiant has announced two new non-stop flights to Destin, FL, Sanford, FL, Tampa/St. Pete., FL and Myrtle Beach, SC. With its new airline partner, Contour Airlines, North Central West Virginia Airport also offers round-trip flights to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).

Greenbrier Valley Airport (LWB)

The Greenbrier Valley Airport (LWB) in Lewisburg offers non-stop daily service to Charlotte (CLT) through American Airlines as well as non-stop service to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Washington Dulles (IAD) through United Express operated by Skywest Airlines.

Morgantown Municipal Airport (MGW)

Morgantown Municipal Airport (MGW) in Morgantown offers daily flights to Washington Dulles Airport (IAD) and Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) in Pennsylvania operated by Southern Airways Express.

Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport (PKB)

The Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport (PKB) in Parkersburg currently services flights to Douglas International (CLT) Charlotte, NC and Tampa International Airport (TPA) Tampa, FL.

Huntington Tri-State Airport (HTS)

Huntington Tri-State Airport (HTS) provides non-stop service to Orlando (SFB), Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg (PIE), Fort Myers/Punta Gorda (PGD) and Myrtle Beach (MYR) through Allegiant. Nonstop flights to Douglas International Airport (CLT) in Charlotte, NC are operated by American Airlines.
